US Congressman, Confederate States Congressman. Born in Monticello, Kentucky, he attended the common schools of Wayne County while working on his family's farm. Chrisman studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849, and practiced as an attorney in Wayne County. He tried unsuccessfully to become a member of the Kentucky Legislature in 1845 and 1847 and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1849. Elected to represent Kentucky's 4th District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1853 to 1855. Chrisman lost his bid for reelection in 1854 and unsuccessfully contested the results of that election. During the Civil War, he was elected in November of 1861 to represent Kentucky in the Confederate States Congress and served in the 1st and 2nd sessions from 1862 until the collapse of its existence in 1865. He returned to Monticello and resumed his legal profession until he was elected to the Kentucky Legislature for two terms beginning in 1869. Chrisman retired from politics in 1871 and practiced law in Monticello until his death in 1881 when he was 62 years old.
