Irene Blase, 18, of 161 Elm Avenue, Bogota, NJ, was tragically murdered on Tuesday, April 8, 1969. She vanished from Hackensack on Monday, April 7, 1969 and two boys who were fishing from a bridge found her face-down in four feet of water in Saddle River, strangled to death with a wire, cord or perhaps the chain of a crucifix she was wearing. Richard Cottingham, 73, who was notoriously known as the Torso Killer, admitted in 2009 to committing her murder, while serving a life sentence in the New Jersey State Prison. He had been in the state prison system since the early 1980s for other murders. The investigation into him led to a trail of violence and savage murders. Richard was ultimately convicted of two murders and three kidnappings in New Jersey, in addition to the murders of three women in New York. He is currently serving more than 200 years for two murders in New Jersey and a life sentence for Nancy Vogel's murder. Richard has been in custody since July 1981 and has a parole eligibility date in August 2025. He is currently incarcerated in New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.
