SAVANNAH, Ga. – Norma Daire Guest Cording passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2015, in her home with her family by her side and under the care of Hospice Savannah.

She was born July 29, 1944, in Royston, Ga., to the late James H. and Mary Ann Goss Guest, and raised in Bowman, Ga., and Douglas, Ga.

Norma went on to attend the University of Georgia, where she received her B.A. in 1966 and her M.A. in history in 1975, with a thesis on women's education in antebellum Georgia.

Norma served as a flight attendant for United Airlines and was based in Miami, New York, Washington, D.C., and finally Chicago, residing in Urbana, where her husband was professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois. In 1993, she retired from the airline to become a full-time homemaker.

Norma was a certified Master Gardener of the American Horticultural Society, steadily developing a luxuriant garden in her sprawling yard overlooking the Illinois farmland.

She played on and captained USTA league tennis teams from Champaign-Urbana that in several years advanced through state to sectionals, and, in 1996, to the USTA National Championships in Palm Springs, Calif. She was an active participant in Advantage Illinois, a volunteer program supporting UI men's and women's tennis.

She enjoyed participating in women's Bible studies and was a member of Twin City Bible Church in Urbana.

In 2006, she returned to her home state, moving to Savannah, Ga., with her husband.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Edward J. Cording, son, Evan J. Cording, and sister, Mary Jean Drew, all of Savannah; and brothers, Maj. Gen. James A. Guest, U.S. Army (Ret.) and Maj. Gen. Robert K. Guest, U.S. Army (Ret.).

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at Independent Presbyterian Church, Savannah, Ga., with reception following at the family home, 119 W. Huntingdon St.
