John Began was born in Woburn on September 13, 1925. He attended St. Charles Grammar School and was graduated from Woburn High School. After his graduation and until his entrance into the service he was employed at the Atlantic Gelatin Company.
On May 24, 1944, John entered the Marine Corps. After his boot training at Parris Island he was sent into the dangerous Pacific Theatre of War. After having taken part in driving the Jap[anese] from the Island of Saipan, John was sent into the battle of Iwo Jima, and it was here that he died on March 18, 1945, as a result of bullet wounds. Among his awards are the Purple Heart and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal.
John is survived by his father, Timothy Began, by two brothers, Timothy and Charles, and by one sister, Ann.
