Police have labeled as a suicide from the afternoon of Wednesday, January 4, 1961. Joseph Patrick Barry, 50, of 375 Kenwood Road, Paramus, NJ took an overdose of pills prescribed for him for treatment of a heart disease and a nervous disorder.

According to police, Oradell authorities called at approximately 6:15 PM to report that they had found him in his car on a street in Oradell in a semiconscious state, and wanted to know if someone from his family could take him home.

Police notified Robert Barry, 17, who went to Oradell and transported his father home. Police said he left his father sitting in the car while he went to get help to take him into the house. Patrolman John Ralph and the Volunteer Ambulance Corps arrived later and tried to revive Joseph.

He was pronounced dead at 7:02 PM by Dr. L. Shedler. Police said they found notes in the glove compartment of the car, which indicated he was despondent and contemplated committing suicide.

An autopsy is to be performed on Thursday, January 5, 1961 by County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Raphael Gilady. He said the results of the autopsy would not be known until toxicological reports can be completed. It will take at least 48 hours to determine whether death was caused by barbiturates, he explained. It will take longer to determine if death was caused by another type of poison.

The body was removed to Vander Plaat Funeral Home where services will be conducted on Saturday, January 7, 1961 at 11 AM by the Reverend John H. Westbrook of the Congregational Church. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Lilian, and another son, James, stationed at a Marine base in Jacksonville, NC. He is also survived by three brothers and two sisters: James C. of Paramus, Harold of Washington D.C., Christopher of Flushing, NY, Anna Benedicks of New York, and Rose Christiansen of New York.

The family will receive friends at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 113 South Farview Avenue, Paramus, NJ on Thursday, January 5, 1961 and Friday, January 6, 1961 from 7-10 PM.
