Albert E. Knowland, for fifty-five years a Western Union operator, died today at a convalescent home in Tulsa.

Mr. Knowland would have been 87 years old in May. He retired June 1, 1935, after his lengthy telegraph service. Prior to his retirement he had been for fourteen years the day operator for the wire service in the office of The Star and had helped transmit many important news stories of that period.

The former telegrapher became ill with pneumonia in February this year. He recovered from the ailment but then suffered from a heart ailment and was required to reside in a rest home in recent weeks.

He was born in Onley, Ill., and came to Kansas City in 1908. He moved to Tulsa about 1940. He had been living there before his illness with sons and daughters.

As a boy of 15, Mr. Knowland joined Western Union as an apprentice in his home town. During his apprenticeship, the assassination of President Garfield occurred. The young apprentice carried messages from the railroad station to the town's post office, where they were posted in a window for the public to read.

He worked with railroads until 1900, when he became manager of the Western Union office in Parsons, Kas.

He was assigned to Kansas City about 1910. His home formerly was at 1122 Greeley avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. Mr. Knowland was a Mason, a member of the Church of the Brethren in Kansas City, Kansas, and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Following his retirement, Mr. Knowland spent several years traveling and fishing.

He leaves four sons, P.T. Knowland, N.W. Knowland, J.W. Knowland, all of Tulsa, and L.M. Knowland, 6158 Holmes street, a musician with the Kansas City Philharmonic and WDAF orchestras; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Chambers and Mrs. Gerald Reardon, both of Tulsa; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
