LEONARD C. PFEFFER
(1926 - 2007)

Leonard C. Pfeffer, age 81, of 1409 S. 24th St., Manitowoc, died on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, 2007, of acute kidney failure, surrounded by his daughter and son, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

He was born on Dec. 19, 1926, in Manitowoc, son of the late Leonard T. and Lucy E. (Bouril) Pfeffer. Leonard graduated from St. Boniface Elementary Catholic School. Upon graduation from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, in 1945, he entered the U.S. Army Air Force. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the 9th Weather Detachment overseas for two years. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army Air Force, he returned home, where he joined his father Leonard T., his mother Lucy, and his brother Clyde W., in the family business, Pfeffer Funeral Home. He then attended and graduated from The Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science, Milwaukee, and received his Wisconsin Funeral Directors and Embalmers License in 1950. He was joined later by his youngest brother, Roy T., in the family business. Leonard took great personal pride in serving the Manitowoc community for 57 years, and is one of the oldest active licensed funeral directors in the state of Wisconsin. On Feb. 3, 1950, he married the former Dolores M. Larson at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 1981. He later married the former Elouise L. Gadzinski on May 19, 1997, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Hollandtown. She preceded him in death on Aug. 5, 2006.

Leonard was very active in the community. Memberships included: St. Francis of Assisi Parish; 57-year member of the American Legion Drews Bleser Post 88; 56-year member of the V.F.W. Otto Oas Post 659; life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 708; 39-year member of the Elks Lodge 687; and honorary life member of Knights of Columbus counsel 710. He was also a charter member, 50-year participant, and past president of the Serria Club of Manitowoc, Manitowoc Seagulls, Travelers Protection Agency, Kiwanis Golden K and the Manitowoc Senior Center. His professional achievements include: a Certificate of Recognition presented by the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association for more than 50 years of service to his community. Leonard was one of the founders and board member of the former Manitowoc County Bank. He also was a past member of the Board of Education at Roncalli High School, where he served as president of the finance committee during the establishment of the high school. Leonard's life focused around his family and his career. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and dedicated professional serving the community. He enjoyed having a good time with friends, playing cards with the guys in the Royal Flush Poker Club and taking trips to the casino.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law: Steven L. & Beth Pfeffer; a daughter and son-in-law: Judy & Dr. William Davidson III; five grandchildren: Amanda & Sharon Pfeffer, Elizabeth, William IV and Tyler Davidson; a sister-in-law: Marilyn Pfeffer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ralph & Bernice Ann Rydzewski, Allan (Bud) Erickson, Elline Brick, Ellsworth Larson; and a special nephew: C. Skip Pfeffer. Other nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors and many friends also survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister-in-law: Clyde W. Pfeffer; and Roy T. and Eileen Pfeffer; a nephew: Michael Pfeffer; a niece: Debbie Pfeffer; a sister-in-law: Betty Lou Erickson; and a brother-in-law: Charles Brick.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m., at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dan Felton, with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Graveside Military Rites will be accorded by V.F.W. Otto Oas Post 659.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m., led by Deacon Robert Drobka.

Friends may also call at the funeral home on Saturday morning, Dec. 29, 2007, from 9 until 10 a.m.

In order to continue his dedication to the community, a memorial has been established in Leonard's name.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of Holy Family Memorial Medical Center for the care and compassion they extended to Leonard and his family in their time of need.
