Better known as Helen Kull Monnette, she was born Helen Marie Kull in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1889 to Christian Gottlieb and Helen Kull, immigrants from Germany. She had a younger sister, Wilhelmina (aka Aunt Jeff), and an older brother, Freddie.
Seeking something beyond what Pittsburgh could offer, Helen moved on to Los Angeles where she took secretarial jobs. She was joined by her mother and sister. In 1917 she married the President of Citizen's National Bank, Orra Eugene Monnette. In her, Orra found the perfect companion, and Helen too found someone who adored her. They were the parents of a daughter, like her mother and her grandmother was named Helen - differentiated by the last name of Orra's late mother, which was "Hull".
While other wives of upcoming businessmen would expect more and larger living accommodations as their spouse rose in prominence, Helen was grateful for what the couple had rather than what others would have aspired too. This was a quality that her husband greatly appreciated. Their lives were full of travel and civic involvement, and of course, his passion - genealogy.
Throughout their 19 year marriage, she was his happy companion. Always smiling, always interested. That came to a close in February 1936 when Orra died after a lengthy illness. She never remarried. But in the 1940s, Helen became a loving and doting grandmother to three granddaughters - all called her "Preshie". She remained active in civic life and loved the arts.
In 1960, with her daughter, Mrs. Monnette made the donation of her husband's large personal genealogical library to the Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library. In doing so she shared her husband's great avocational love with the institution that he chaired from 1916 to his death in 1936.
