Passenger aboard U.S. Army Air Forces C-49J #43-1971.

Killed in service when the transport (government-requisitioned DC-3 airliner) stalled and crashed near Hempstead, New Hampshire. Investigators could not determine what caused the airplane to go into a shallow spin, then dive vertically into the woods near a lake [Island Pond].

All four aboard perished:

R. T. Whidden, Pilot, civilian
