Fred was a logger when he lived in Oregon, and he moved to Tuolumne County in the 1930s. He owned a dairy ranch on Phoenix Lake Road for 15 years. After selling the ranching and moving to Sonora, he worked as a night watchman for Pickering Lumber Company for seven years. He was also employed by the Sonora Police Department and the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department.
He was survived by a son, Lyle Robert Ostrander (1915-2008) of Fossil, Oregon, a sister, Luella Geisy, of Salem, Oregon; a brother, Wilber Ostrander of Berkeley; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Frederick married Hazel Dell Brown on 1 Dec 1910, in Bay City. They had five children, but he outlived four of them. Besides Lyle, their children were Francis Edwin Ostrander (1911-1954), Vivian Marie Ostrander (1913-1933), Alfred George Ostrander (1917-1956), and Dorothy Maxine Ostrander (1922-1936). The couple divorced 23 Jun 1939, and Hazel married Jess Albert Cantril in Skamania, Washington, on 17 May 1958.
