Audrey E. Ertel died on January 14, 2022 from a combination of advanced age and Covid 19. She was 94 years old. She was born on November 18, 1927 in the Town of Centerville, daughter of the late John & Myrtle (Hoenke) Hinz. At a very young age she attended the birthday party of a neighbor who was a Civil War Veteran. She attended Pleasant Hill grade school and graduated from Central High School in 1945.

During WWII she wrote letters to GI's and worked in her father's cheese factory. She continued her education in Minneapolis and received a degree in teletype. She was hired by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad out of Chicago and sent to San Bernadino, California to work. She later moved back to Wisconsin and married Paul Ertel on December 6, 1947. They lived in Sheboygan so that Audrey could care for her grandmother who had dementia. While living in Sheboygan she had her first three children. She also found time to be a member of the Sheridan Elementary PTA. After her grandmothers death they moved to the Cleveland area and had three more children.

When her children were young Audrey gardened and canned fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed baking bread, doughnuts and fried chicken with baking soda biscuits on Sundays. For a few summers she grew cucumbers and sold them in Kiel to the pickle factory. When her children were all in school, Audrey took classes at LTC in Cleveland and got a job as the bookkeeper for the Cleveland Coop. She worked there 22 years until her retirement in June of 1992.

After retirement, she continued to garden, sew, quilt and embroider. She enjoyed playing golf and watching John Wayne movies and CSI. She also had time to perfect her cream cheese cut-out cookies. Audrey also babysat many of her grandchildren.

She was a member of Bethel UCC, Ada. She served on the consistory, sang in the choir and was the church historian. She spent many months translating Bethel's church records from German to English. She was assisted by Rev. Ulrich, Robert and Nancy Spindler. She was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School for 20 years. Audrey was a charter member of the Cleveland VFW Auxillary since 1950 and held various offices. She taught knitting in the Liberty Pole 4H Club and was a member of the Manitowoc County Pigeon River Homemakers. She participated in the Centerville Historical Society and enjoyed doing family genealogy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul on April 10, 1981, her brother John Jr, her granddaughter, Tracee and great granddaughter, Hope.

Survivors include her children; Joan (Herb) Woelfel, Paul Jr, Diana (Randy) Schmidt, Janet (Pete) Wesley, Jim (Kim) Ertel and David (Brenda) Ertel. 21 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, her sisters; Judith Pechmiller and Beatrice Spindler, sister-in-law; Marlys Salm.

A private family service has taken place. Burial followed at Bethel UCC Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all of the kind staff at Gables on the Pond in Random Lake and the wonderful staff at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
