James Albert Foster was born on 5 April 1832 in Allen County, Kentucky, the son of Price Foster and Nancy Hairston. They lived in Allen County, Kentucky
James Albert Foster was a Civil War Veteran. He served in Company C, 6th Texas Cavalry Division, Russ Brigade, enlisting in 1861 and serving until close of war.
The records showed that J.A. Foster, private and sergeant, Company C, 6th Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army, enlisted September 10, year not stated. On the company roll for May and June 1864, last on file, he was recorded present. No later record of him has been found. His widow was awarded a pension (file # 21262, Original county: Dallas). Mrs. Foster stated in this application that she married J.A. Foster "in January 1869 in Hood County, Texas."
James Albert Foster, as stated above, married in January 1869 in Hood County, Texas to Sarah Tom Talley. Sarah was born on 9 February 1853 in Kentucky and when she was three years old, the family moved to Dallas County, Texas. She was the daughter of William S. Talley and Virginia West Duff.
James and Sarah lived in Dallas County, Texas for the 1870 and the 1880 Federal Population Censuses. They had three children, all born in Garland, Dallas County, Texas.
In 1900, they are living in Precinct #4, Jones County, Texas, with their oldest son John W. living next door and their daughter Amanda and husband R.M. Morris living two houses away.
James died on 6 January 1908 in Merkel, Taylor County, Texas. He was buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel.
Sarah is living as the head of the house with her son John W. and family living with her in Merkel, Taylor County, Texas.
By 1920 Sarah and the John W. Foster family have moved to Fruitvale, Van Zandt County, Texas. They are there in 1930 for the census also.
Sarah died in Edgewood, Van Zandt on 27 January 1933 and was buried in the Creagleville Cemetery at Fruitvale.

Pioneer Taylor Co. Citizen Dies at Merkel Monday

Grandpa J. A. Foster died at the family residence in this city this afternoon at one o'clock.
Mr. Foster has been a sufferer from cancer for some time but his case was not thought serious and the announcement of his death this afternoon came as quite a surprise and shock to his many friends. He was one of the pioneer citizens of Taylor county, a good man and universally liked. He was seventy-six years of age and leaves a wife and several children to mourn his loss.
His remains will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery tomorrow, and the Telegram extends deep sympathy to the bereaved.-Merkel Telegram.
