Robert Smith's Rites Are Held

Services for Robert Lawrence Smith, 55, of 903 Third St., Osawatomie, were held Friday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home. Mr. Smith died Jan. 18 in the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital, Leavenworth.

The son of Roy and Mary Smith, he was born June 14, 1927, in Parker. He grew up in the Parker community and attended school there.

He married Julia Smith of Ruffin, N.C. Jan. 23, 1959 in Columbia, S.C.

Mr. Smith was employed by Taylor Forge, Division of Gulf Western Industrial Products, Inc. in Paola before he was forced to retire in 1979 because of illness. He had cancer.

He was a veteran of World War II.

Preceding him in death were three brothers and a sister.

Among the survivors are his wife, Julia of the home; four daughters, Terri McVay and Pam Bowers, Osawatomie; and Kathy Smith and Amy Smith, of the home; his father, Roy Smith, Parker; five sisters, Wanda Clark, Paola, Evelyn Clearwater, Topeka, Mary Zimmerman, Gardner, Rosie Rues, Merriam, and Betty Spector, Raytown, Mo.; and three brothers, Melvin Smith, Kansas City, Wendell Smith, Olathe, and Junior Smith, Hamilton.

The services were conducted by Chaplain John Devine. Elaine Page and Anita Martin sang, accompanied by Mrs. Martin at the organ. Pallbearers were Dan Hadlock, I.B. Doerhoff, John Cragg, William Mulford, Brian Mulligan, Charles Courtney and Joe Lee. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Parker.
