Death Yesterday Of Lt. Col. C. J. Stewart - The death occurred at the Prince Edward Island Hospital yesterday afternoon of Lieut. Col. Charles John Cecil Stewart, M.C. after a brief illness.

The late Lt. Col. Stewart was born at Southport, the son of the late John Stewart and Beatrice Haszard Stewart. He was educated at Prince of Wales College and served for some years with the Canadian Bank of Commerce and other banking institutions and enlisted for overseas service at the outbreak of the First World War.

He had a distinguished military career, was twice wounded in action and was personally decorated by King George V. with the Military Cross at Buckingham Palace, his citation reading "For valor on the field in France". On his return from overseas he was placed in command of the P. E. Island Highlanders with the rank of Lieut. Colonel. He entered the Provincial Civil Service and for a number of years occupied the office of Deputy Provincial Treasurer, retiring in 1947 as a result of ill health.

Although handicapped since his retirement, he endured his incapacity and illness with exemplary courage, and maintained his friendly contacts with a wide circle of acquaintances.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Rogers Stewart, and by two brothers, Guy and Edwin, who still reside on the old homestead at Belleview, Southport. A nephew, Mr. Clive Stewart is employed in the engineering department of the Civil Service and resides in Charlottetown.
