Evalina P. Russell Passes Away
Mrs. Evalina Phillips Russell died at her home in Sistersville this morning about half past three o'clock, of old age and the general breaking down of the system.
She had been ill for some time, and while very old and feeble, still her death was unexpected at this time, and was a shock to her many relatives and friends.
Her maiden name was Evalina Phillips Thistle, daughter of Sampson and Susanna Thistle, and was born Thursday, February 15, 1810, on the old Thistle farm above New Martinsville, and was, therefore, in the 96th year of her age.
She was married to Joshua Russell, who departed this life many years ago, and who was in his early life the most prominent and successful merchant in this city. She was the mother of three children, only one of whom survives her, Mrs. S. T. Wells of this city, with whom she had lived all her life. Her two sons, Sampson and William, were killed in the Civil War.
She was one of a family of eleven children, four of whom survive, Mr. Archibald Thistle and Mrs. Eliza B. McCoy, of this city, and Mr. George Thistle, of Sardis, and Mrs. Susannah Cox, of New Martinsville.
The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and will take place in the Presbyterian church in this city, of which the deceased has been a member in good standing for many years. After the funeral services are over the remains will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery.
She was a kind neighbor, and indulgent and loving mother and was loved by all for her many acts of kindness. Her whole life had been devoted to her children, grandchildren and relatives and neighbors. May her rest be a sweet, dreamless sleep, and her resurrection the happy one of the Christian.
