In 1864, the Eutaw Whig and Observer reported the following: "Our gallant young friend, William Byrd is, we are pleased to know, recovering from the wound which he received in the battle of Spotsylvania, C.H. This brave young man enlisted in the first company raised in our county, was in all the great Virginia and Maryland battles and behaved in them all with the most distinguished gallantry."

Annie Mary Byrd, administrator for the William P. Byrd estate, purchased new clothing from the Eutaw Mercantile Company in which to bury her brother. William served in Company B, 11th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army. (Greene County Courthouse, estate of W. P. Byrd)
