Born in Ohio, Henshaw was just 18 and living in Chillicothe, Wapello Co., Iowa, when he enlisted in Co. F of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct. 17, 1861, as Bugler. He was mustered into the service on Nov. 23, 1861.

He was wounded in action, and taken prisoner, during the battle of Bear Creek, MS, on June 22, 1863. He was exchanged on Sept. 6, and returned to service Oct. 14, 1863. He was later mustered out of the service on Dec. 4, 1864, at the end of his enlistment.

His invalid pension, #47151, indicates he was disabled by a gunshot wound, rheumatism, and spinal irritation.
