Fort Worth - Joe Davis Heacock, 91, retired dean emeritus of the School of Religious Education at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, in Fort Worth.

Joe Davis Heacock was born Sept. 12, 1906, in Birmingham, Ala.

Dr. Heacock graduated from Howard College in 1928 with an A. B. degree and L. H. D. in 1960, Southwestern Seminary in 1939 with an M. R. E. and D. R. E. in 1950, and had studied at Peabody College in 1955. During his ministerial career, he served at Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City for six years, Polytechnic Baptist Church in Fort Worth for 2 1/2 years, on the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville for two years, and as educational director of Cornell Baptist Church in Fort Worth for seven years.

After his retirement, he was a guest professor, teaching at Hong Kong Baptist Seminary and Japan Baptist Seminary in 1964, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1974, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in 1975, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1978.

He was a member of University Baptist Church and was president of Southwestern Baptist Religious Education Association in 1948, and president of Southern Baptist Religious Education Association in 1967.

Survivors: Wife, Nell Russell Heacock; daughter, Charlene Beeler of Carrollton; grandchildren, Sunday Beeler Blue, Cara Beeler Poff, and Joe Beeler; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
