Charlotte Bailey, devoted mother

Her family knew Charlotte M. Bailey for her selfless actions, her dedication to God and her unwavering faith. She didn't heal the sick or perform other miracles, but her family considered her holy.

"I've always thought of her as being a saint," said Mrs. Bailey's daughter Barbara Jordan, of Knoxville, Tenn. "She died with a rosary in her hand. She was just a deeply devoted Catholic."

Mrs. Bailey, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was 91.

Mrs. Bailey was a wife, and a mother to five children. Raising five children can be stressful, but Mrs. Bailey made it look simple.

"She made it look too easy," Jordan said. "She never complained, she managed with what she had and she was just the kind of mother you wanted to please because you loved her so much."

Mrs. Bailey did the housework, cooked three meals a day and helped her husband with the garden. Like many stay-at-home mothers, she had tough times, but her faith saw her through them.

After her children had grown, she devoted even more of her time to prayer and church.

A member of St. Augustine Church in Covington, Mrs. Bailey went to Mass regularly. She was also a member of two social groups: St. Monica, which meets once a month to pray the rosary and play cards, and Pathfinders, which sponsors picnics, card games and parties.

"She made some wonderful friends in both groups," said Debby Morgeson, of Taylor Mill, another daughter.

Mrs. Bailey wasn't stingy with her love.

"She was very sweet and gentle," Morgeson said. "She prayed for everybody and she was a great listener."

Jordan agreed.

"Nobody felt left out with her," she said. "Everybody felt loved equally."

One of Mrs. Bailey's favorite hobbies was playing cards. She would learn new games at Pathfinders and then teach them to her daughters.

Mrs. Bailey enjoyed visiting with her neighbors. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

"She's going to be sorely missed," Jordan said. "She was the glue that held the family together."

Morgeson said Mrs. Bailey is where she has prayed she would wind up.

Mrs. Bailey's husband, Lynn E. Bailey, died in 2001. Their only son, Jim Bailey, died in 1985.

Other survivors include daughters Carolyn Bombach, of Covington, and Karen Thompson, of Fort Wright; brothers the Rev. Allen Meier, of Park Hills, August Meier, of Erlanger, and Tom Meier, of Union; sisters Helen Topmiller, of Covington and Marge Tenkotte, of Park Hills; and 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will be at the church starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Don Catchen & Son Funeral Homes is handling arrangements.
