Joseph M. Stelzer, 88, of Sun City, AZ, formerly of Manitowoc, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022.

Joe was born on February 8, 1934, in Manitowoc to Joseph and Anna (Tisler) Stelzer. Joe attended grade school at Taus and St. Paul's Catholic grade school and graduated Lincoln High School with the class of 1951. After his father's passing at the age of 12, Joe worked at Hillside Grocery Store and Dunnings Grocery Store to help his mother with bills. At the age of 16, he worked at A&P Grocery Store, becoming full time after graduating from high school. On his 18th birthday he began working at Invincible Metal Furniture Company until 1971.

Joe served his country in the United States Army Signal Corps from 1955-1957 as a classroom instructor being selected to instruct at West Pointe, NY. He was honorably discharged in 1957. Joe married the former Lois Brey on April 26, 1958, and later departed as friends having fathered one dear son, Joseph C. Stelzer, and also lost three children in childbirth. Joe later married the former Judith A. Krall on December 27, 1975.

In 1971, Joe worked for the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department full time as the Jail Administrator. In 1984 Joe, Judy, and daughter Jessica moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Joe worked various jobs and business ventures. Joe also worked at Sprouts Farmers Market in customer service, this was his favorite job, he truly enjoyed the interaction with his customers. He started this last employment in May of 2003 and worked part time until 2016.

Joe was a lifetime member of the AMVETS post #99 and was a Flag Patch Chairman in 1970.

He is survived by his wife: Judith Stelzer Sun City, AZ; his son: Joseph C. Stelzer, Manitowoc; stepdaughter: Jessica (Paul) Meyer, Antibes, France; two sisters: Kathryn Nowak of Milwaukee and Ann Schleh of Fond Du Lac; and one brother: Le Roy Stelzer of Greenwood; mother-in-law: Marcella Krall, Manitowoc. He is further survived by, the mother of his son: Lois Kubsh, Manitowoc; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Joseph and Anna Stelzer; two brothers: Charles Stelzer and Donald Stelzer; one sister: LaVern Kabat; and three infant children.

A funeral service to celebrate Joe's life will be held at 3pm on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at Peace United Church of Christ, 3613 Waldo Blvd, with Deacon Al Boeldt officiating. Relatives and friends may greet the family at the church on Sunday, February 20, 2022, from 1pm until the time of service at 3pm. Joe will be laid to rest at the Knollwood Mausoleum.
