Former Rock Valley resident, Irene Slater, 88, of Guthrie Center, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2005 at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, December 16, at the First United Methodist Church, Guthrie Center with Rev. Lilian Gallo-Seagren as officiate. Burial was at Dalmanutha Cemetery, rural Casey.
Irene was born November 10, 1917 to Forrest and Nina (Ellet) Bailey in Guthrie County, Iowa. She grew up on the farm in Guthrie County and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1933. She taught school at Maple Grove country school for several years. Irene was married to Merle Slater on May 27, 1939 at Maryville, Missouri. In 1954, she began teaching in country schools in Sioux County, Iowa and she made her home in Rock Valley, Iowa. She later taught in Sioux Center Community Schools for 30 years. She graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City. Iowa in 1968 with B.A. Degree in Education. She retired from teaching in 1948 and in 1997, she moved to Guthrie Center.
Irene was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bowling and golfing. She was a member of the Iowa Education Association, National Education Association, Women's Club and various bridge clubs.
She is survived by her son Kenneth L. Slater of Cherokee, Daughters, Sandra Wilkinson of Panora, Ginger Sommer of Miami, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Slater of Adel; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Leonore Mikkelsen of Guthrie Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Merle, son Jerry, sister, Pauline McGlothlin and Maxine Bailey.
