Archie Lloyd Barber Jr.

Former Fairbanks resident, Archie Lloyd Barber Jr., 83, died April 9, 2007, in Seattle, after a long illness.

He was born in Spur, Texas, May 6, 1923, to Archie and Lois (McKeever) Barber Sr.

He married Donna Gail Messman on Christmas Day 1946, in Sandpoint, Idaho. Donna is still living, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day, 2006, with their seven children and many grandchildren.

He proudly served his country as an Army Air Corps cadet during World War II and as a flight engineer on the B-36 "Peacemaker" bomber during the Korean War.

Barber moved to Fairbanks in 1952 to join the Barber family trucking business. In 1957, he began his 21-year career with the Alaska Territorial Police, which after Alaskan statehood, became the Alaska State Troopers. He opened the first State Trooper post in Dillingham, served many years as a state trooper in Fairbanks, and also lived and worked for the troopers in Juneau and Anchorage.

He retired in 1978 as a captain with the Alaska State Troopers. He and Donna enjoyed 23 years of retirement in Port Townsend, Wash., before moving to Seattle in 2001 to live closer to family.

Barber lived a long life, but not long enough for those who knew and loved him. He always had an intense love for his life, his family, and his country, and he showed a life-long curiosity and interest in the world. While he had many jobs and roles in his life, his most important roles were as loving husband to Donna, father to seven children, and as "Papa" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Barber is also survived by children, Jeff (Patricia) of San Francisco, Julie White (Bob) of Elmira, Ore., Jana Sullivan (Tim) of Costa Mesa, Calif., Jennifer Ray (Larry) of Columbus, Ohio, Joni Brandt (Gary) of Anchorage, and Jill Gilbert (Jon) of Seattle, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His son, Jonn Lee Barber, died unexpectedly on April 17, 2007. Jonn is survived by his wife, Devi, and daughter, Shalayna.

There will be no service. Remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association, 710 2nd Ave., Suite 900, Seattle, WA 98104.
