James J. Hoyt was born in Syracuse, New York on April 23rd, 1941, to George Albert and Mary Ruth (Scott) Hoyt. He passed away at his home in Norfolk, Virginia, on March 25th, 2014, with his wife Maria and his daughter Tracy at his side.

Enlisting at the age of 19, he spent 27 years in the US Navy, culminating in his final tour as Command Master Chief, Naval Station Norfolk. Continuing to serve his country after retiring from the Navy, J.J. became an innovator in the field of Resource Recovery and Recycling as a Civil Servant for the Navy where he was nationally recognized for his leadership in the field. Retiring in 2003 allowed him to devote more time to his passions of painting, wood-carving, and gardening. He was an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association (Branch 99) and the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

J.J. is survived by his wife of 40 years Maria Corazon B. Hoyt; his daughter Tracy Leigh Hoyt; his brother George Hoyt and his family; and countless cousins & life-long friends, many of whom he was fortunate to have reconnected with over the last few years.

A celebration of J.J's life was held at on March 31st, 2014, at the Hollomon-Brown Chapel, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Navy Memorial in his name. A plaque will be placed in Washington, DC, commemorating his life and service.
