John was born on March 14, 1938 in Manitowoc. He was the son of the late Norbert and Lydia Eichhorst Kumbalek. John was a graduate of Lincoln High School graduating with the class of 1956. He then became employed for two years with Consumer Steel followed by two years with Manitowoc Ship Building. From 1960 to 1964 John served with the Unites States Coast Guard. He then returned to Manitowoc and became employed with Manitowoc Engineering until 1998 when he retired. On May 5, 1969 John married Carol Jane H. Endries at Waukegan, Illinois and then on May 28, 1969 at the Endries residence. Carol preceded John in death on September 3, 2010. John was the job foreman at the Pinecrest Historical Village and was a member of the Manitowoc County Historical Society. He enjoyed working with wood, doing jigsaw puzzles and downhill skiing.
He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Steve Loveless, Mishicot, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert and Lydia Kumbalek, wife, Carol, two brothers, Harold and Richard Kumbalek, and one sister, Janice Reinemann.
A Life Celebration Social is being planned at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center in the Spring of 2022. An announcement will be made in the Herald Times Reporter and on radio stations WOMT & WCUB prior to the event taking place. Cremation has taken place at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel. Burial of the cremated remains will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc following the Life Celebration Social in the spring.
