Andrew Jackson (Jack) Abernathy Jr., 92, of Fayetteville passed away on February 21, 2022.

He was a 30-year US Army Veteran who enlisted at the age of 16 on 14 April 1946. His first posting was France in Allied Occupied Europe in late 1946, shortly after turning 17. Andrew served in the Korean war and was a Battle of the Chosin Reservoir Survivor. He served 3 combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam. His various military service awards include two bronze stars, WWII Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, and a Vietnam service medal. He was an avid golfer for many years into his retirement and has 3 documented hole-in-ones.

Andrew is preceded in death by his father, Andrew Jackson Abernathy Sr.; mother, Addie Rebecca Steele; his beloved wife, Elizabeth Rose (Franklin) Abernathy; and daughter, Linda Faye Abernathy.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his son, Gerald Lee Abernathy of Denver, CO, and his nephew, Richard Anthony Troyon of Clinton.

A Graveside Service will be held at 10 Am on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Spring Lake, NC with Chaplin Christian officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow the service.
