Grandmother, left us on 11 November 2015, to be with her Father in heaven and
her husband, John and family. She will dearly be missed by her family and
everyone who knew her. She was born 3 March 1917 in Hazleton, PA, to Phillip
H. Lewis and Mary Isabella (Fisher) Lewis. Her mother passed away when she was
eight, leaving behind Edith and her two brothers. Her father married Mabel
Jones Weir. They had four more children, whom mom took care of and loved very
much. Mom was a concert pianist, who along with her brother, Gordon, who was a
concert violinist, played on many stages. Mom also played the organ for her
church. She met John Garfield James, the love of her life, while grocery
shopping with her mother. They eloped to Schickshinny, PA on 7 August 1937.
They celebrated their 76th anniversary before her beloved John passed away in
2013. To this union, they had two children, Nancy (Carl) Babiar of
Leavenworth, WA and John C. (Suzanne) James of Grapevine, WA. Mom and dad had
a wonderful life together. They provided us with a "Leave It To Beaver" life.
Dad's job required moving many times as his career developed. In retirement,
they moved to Leavenworth, Washington, to be near their daughter and her family. They especially loved the traveling in their RV all over the states and Canada,
usually visiting their many relatives.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, John; brothers, Gordon, Clyde and
Phillip; sisters, Ellen and Janet, and beloved grandson, Brandon James. She is
survived by her children, Nancy (Carl) Babiar and John C. (Suzanne) James;
grandchildren, Dawn (Bruce) Darling, Marc (Rose) Babiar, Susan (Sean) Edwards,
J. Douglas James, Leigh Babiar, and Jason (Melody) James; 14 great-
grandchildren, and one sister, Rebecca Wright of Hazleton, PA.
We would like to express our appreciation to everyone at Cashmere Convalescent
Center, especially Charlene Dronen, Gina Cornelius Goodwin, Mitch, Geralyn, Vi
Fischer, and the whole crew that provided exceptional care to our mother; we
are grateful to you all.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North West Spokane Young Life in
