During the 1850 and 1860 Census, Marshal was living with his parents in Knox County, Kentucky.
Marshal enlisted as a Musician in Company C of the 49th Kentucky Infantry Regiment on 27 Jun 1863 at Knox City (Barbourville), Kentucky. He was only 15 years of age but claimed to be 18. He was mustered in on 19 Sep 1863 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. In October 1863, he was sick in the hospital at Camp Nelson and was given a disability discharge at Camp Nelson on 25 Dec 1862. The surgeon remarked that Marshal was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of extreme youth, being but 15 years and 1 month. Besides, he has had Chronic diarrhea for several months. He is unfit for invalid corps. Disability existed before enlistment.
During the 1870 Census, Marshal was living with the family of his brother, John A. Baker in Knox County, Kentucky where he was farming. Living next door was his mother, Emily and his younger siblings.
During the 1880 Census, Marshal and his wife, Barbara Hensley were living in Knox County, Kentucky where he was farming. Also living in the household was his step-children, Martha, Andrew and Henry Shelton. Living next door was the family of 29 year old, Henry Baker.
Marshal applied for an Invalid Pension on 12 Nov 1885, Application # 553947, Certificate # 389700. Widow's Application # 808414 and Minor's Application # 825621. No dates or names were recorded for the Widow or the Minor.
During the 1890 Veterans Schedule, Marshal was living on Stinking Creek, Knox County, Kentucky with a post office address of Flat Lick. His disability incurred in service was listed as Rheumatism and Piles.
