Associate Professor Emeritus Owen Cappleman passed away in Austin, Texas, on September 25, 2014, at the age of 76.

Cappleman was a painter, graphic designer, computer artist, and inveterate traveler. During his teaching career, he introduced generations of future architects to the principles of design. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Florida State University in 1960 and a master of fine arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1966. He taught first-year design, visual communication, and computer imaging at the UT Austin School of Architecture, retiring in 2004 with 40 years of service on the faculty.

Cappleman traveled extensively in Asia and focused on this area in much of his research, photography, and writing. Other areas of inquiry included computer imaging and visualization and pedagogical theory relating to the beginning design student. These interests culminated in a book titled Foundations in Architecture: An Annotated Anthology of Beginning Design Projects, co-authored with UTSOA alum and former Associate Professor Michael Jordan [B.Arch. '70] and published in 1993.

Long-time colleague Associate Professor Larry Doll observed, "He was a central figure in the Dean Alan Taniguchi era, and he represented an important aspect of what Alan thought architectural education should be. For decades, Owen had a significant influence on students and alumni." Michael Jordan reflected, "Owen was far more to me than a colleague. He was an integral piece of my life during my decade at UT Austin. There was no one who could possibly replace him. At a personal level, he was a friend of the deepest sort, the brother I never had. Our close relationship continued until the time of his death, and he will remain in my heart."

Owen is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Amy Sievers and Mackey Cappleman; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his son, Hans Cappleman.
