I. Katherine (Kay) Chew was born to J.A. and Ida Achre in Spokane on April 14, 1917. She went to her eternal home on March 18, 2009. She was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she was active in the choir and as a soloist. Kay graduated from North Central High School in 1935 and went on to college at WSC, now WSU, where she belonged to the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She served as an officer in the U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII and was stationed in Washington, D.C. In 1952 she earned a BA in Business Administration at WSC and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Whitworth College in 1970. Kay worked for many years as an accountant before teaching accounting at Spokane Falls Community College.

Kay enjoyed tennis and golf and spent several winters in Palm Springs. She was proud that she hit a hole-in-one two times on the same hole. She belonged to the Spokane Racquet Club, playing tennis until she was almost 90 years old. Gardening was a joy to Kay, sharing the bounty from her vegetable garden with many friends and family. She participated in many civic activities with her husband Firth J Chew, who preceded her in death. They enjoyed and supported Spokane Civic Theatre, Spokane Symphony, WAMPUM, and others.

Kay was preceded in death by husbands Alvin T. Olson and Edward F. Harris, as well as Firth J Chew. She is survived by daughters Chris (Jim) Brittain and Kathi Skarbo; grandsons Rolfe Brittain, Nyer (Kimberly) Brittain, Kai Skarbo, and Paul Skarbo; eight great-grandchildren; sisters Lucille Gump and Evelyn (Ron) Muck; and several nieces and nephews. She loved Firth's family as her own – J'Ana and Paul Gregory, Larry and Ferol Chew, Beck (deceased) and Katie Chew and their children and grandchildren.

The family deeply appreciates the care and concern Kay received from the staff at Riverview Care Center. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Lutheran Church, Spokane Civic Theatre Endowment Fund, Spokane Symphony, or a charity of your choice.

Viewing and Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 25, 26 and 27th from 10:00AM to 5:00PM at Heritage Funeral Home. A Celebration of her life will be held 11:00AM Saturday, March 28 at Central Lutheran Church, 512 S Bernard.
