Pfc. EARL E. STOKES

Earl Stokes, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stokes of this city[,] was born in Woburn on August 18, 1919. He received his early training in Woburn Schools and was a graduate of Woburn High School. In civilian life, Earl was employed by the International Cooperage Company in Winchester. Earl will be long remembered as an ardent fan of all sports, and a great supporter of all activities undertaken to promote sports in this city.

On June 20, 1942, Earl entered the U.S. Army, and after completing his basic training in this country, he went overseas. His journey took him to Africa, where he participated in the North African Campaign. From Africa, Earl was shipped to Sicily, where on August 11, 1943, he died as a result of wounds received in action. To the many military citations which he had won during his period of service are now added the Presidential Citation and the Purple Heart.

In addition to his mother and father, Earl is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Davis and Mrs. Norma DeCaprio, and one brother, Ralph W. Stokes.
