On November 18th 1896, at North Melbourne, Maud married 31-year-old Walter Edward Gillbee, who was the cousin of Jessie Paul's husband, William Frederick Parsons. They lived at Murrumbeena and Richmond, and had five children:
Dorothy Matilda (1897-1967)
Elsie May (1899-1954)
Ernest George (1901-1980)
Clarice Irene (1906-1993)
Grace Marion (1908-1984)
Two weeks after Grace's birth, Maud contracted Pneumonia. For another fortnight, she experienced Cardiovascular syncope, which is when you lapse in and out of consciousness for seconds or minutes at a time, a result of limited blood flow to the brain. It is possible that Maud was suffering from a post-natal illness such as Puerperal Fever, which can cause similar symptoms.
Maud sadly passed away at 12 Tennyson Street, Richmond on November 2nd 1908, aged 29 years and 7 months. A funeral took place two days later, and Maud was buried in the Oakleigh Pioneer Cemetery. Maud left a husband, four young children, and a month-old infant. Walter and his children eventually moved to New South Wales. Walter went on to die 35 years after his wife, in the town of Balranald in the Riverina district of New South Wales.
My father has a childhood memory of his relatives talking about a "Great-aunt Maud" who died in childbirth. This makes it more likely that Maud died of a childbirth-related illness then Pneumonia.
