According to the obituary in the Mayville Sentinel he was buried in the same cemetery as his parents. He died of consumption (TB). He was preceded in death by a baby son and his sister.

After his education in Ripley he went to Cleveland, Ohio. This was likely where he received his medical education. He then moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota where he practiced medicine for 8 years prior to his death. He returned to Ripley due to illness and died at the home of his father-in-law, Colonel C. O. Daughaday.

He married Mary Daughaday, daughter of Colonel and Mrs. C.O. Daughaday in 1847. They had a son, Charles Anson Goodrich, who died 16 September 1849. After James' death Mary married Samuel Heston and moved to Batavia.
