Emmit Armstrong, Jr. transitioned to his heavenly home on December 22, 2016 after a courageous battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. Emmit was born to the late Emmit and Mahala Armstrong, in DeRidder, Louisiana on June 6, 1934. He was the youngest of eight siblings, six preceded him in death: Frankie Shelby, Arcel Armstrong, Tanner Refro, Curlie Stewart, Jimmie McGlothen and Ulysses Carlton Armstrong. At an early age he professed Christ as his Lord and Savior at Sweet Home Baptist Church in DeRidder Louisiana. After moving to Houston, Texas he joined Brentwood Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Herbert Nash and was a member of the choir. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Joe Ratliff, Emmit was ordained as a deacon. As his faith in the Lord grew, he immersed himself in the Sunday School and soon became a Director of the Adult Department #2. He was known for his dedication, dependability and desire to serve regardless of the task. Emmit remained in this position until his health begin to decline. He then became a regular participant in Senior Sunday School class and later the Homebound Sunday School class. Emmit worked for Roadway Express and was a truck driver and Union Steward. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 988 and was vice president under Richard Hammond. After 30 years of service he retired and became involved with the Teamsters Local 988 Retiree Club and was voted in as president of the club for several years. Emmit married his high school sweetheart, Delores Black, May 24, 1958. He has a son, Ronald Lee Armstrong and a daughter Evetta Rose Armstrong. They were the guardians of Marion Renee Paul Lewis and Theodis Wayne Paul. Throughout the years his and Delores' home was a place for family members transitioning from other states to the Houston area. Emmit's passion included his wife, children, the organizations of which he was a member and leader, LSU Basketball and the Oakland Raiders. Emmit leaves to mourn his devoted wife Delores of 58 years; daughter Evetta and son Ronnie and his wife, Velma Patrice; his grandson, Joshua D. Armstrong, his sister Delorise Jones (Houston, TX); his sister-in-laws, Claudette Armstrong (Los Angeles, CA), Elizabeth Brown (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) and Bobbie Beauford (Columbus, GA). He also leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
