Daniel "Dan" Harper Painter, 83, of 740 Old Farm Road in Shenandoah, died Friday, March 19, 2004.

Mr. Painter was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Luray, and was a son of the late Thomas Harrison Painter and Frieda Cornelius (Painter) Painter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Stanley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He served on the Board of Directors for the Page County Assessment Office for five years, Federal Land Bank in Winchester for four years, Southern States for two years, Virginia Farm Bureau Federation for two years and Page County Social Services. He was also employed by APHIS (Animal Plant Heath Inspection Services) with the Department of Agriculture for 25 years. After retiring, he became a local farmer.

On Aug. 25, 1945, he married Lona Jeanette Hilliard, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, L. Danette Wilson of Waynesboro, and Donna S. Mayes of Shenandoah; a son, Douglas S. Painter of Culpeper; a sister, Esta Breeden of Stanley; two brothers, Herbert Painter and Irvin Painter, both of Luray; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Jackie Campbell will conduct a memorial service 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray.
