CHARLES FRANCIS BURNHEIMER -- September 11, 1932 - March 16, 2022

Charles (Chuck) Francis Burnheimer, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at home. Born in Altoona, PA in 1932 to the late Renetta and Max Burnheimer. Also preceded in death by his older brother, George.

Chuck was a loving husband of 65 years and 4 months, father of four, grandfather and great-grandfather, who took great pride in his large family. He's survived by his wife Louise Magaro Burnheimer; four children, Terri Hildebrand of Dillsburg (Tim), Thomas Burnheimer of Etters (Suzanne), Nancy Kay Davis of Mechanicsburg and John Burnheimer of Bowmansdale. Chuck also has four grandchildren, Emily and Greg Hildebrand, Lucy Davis and Spencer Burnheimer and two great-grandchildren, Gideon and Atticus Hildebrand. He's also survived by his nephew, Raymond Burnheimer (Rita).

Chuck was a 1950 graduate of Altoona High School and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Shippensburg State Teachers' College; now known as Shippensburg University. He was a member of the Red Raiders football team for four years where he was Co-Captain his senior year of an undefeated team. He played tackle on both offense and defense, earning honorable mention on the All Pennsylvania Team, was All Confrence in 1953 and in 2002, Chuck was inducted into the Shippensburg University Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition to the football team, he was a member of Phi Sigma Chi, Varsity Club and several other organizations on campus.

After graduation, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps. He completed basic training at Quantico, VA where he earned the rank of First Lieutenant. Following his service in the Marine Corps, in 1956 Chuck married his college sweetheart, Louise. He then began his teaching career as an elementary teacher and assistant football coach in the Cumberland Valley School District. He later accepted a position as a fifth-grade teacher at West Shore School District where he remained until his retirement in 1993. Chuck worked at many part-time jobs to supplement his income. A few were as a builder, which came in handy when he built a beautiful home for his family, bartender and for 23 years, a Capitol Trailways bus driver.

Chuck was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg and one of its founding members. There, he volunteered as a kitchen worker for the Apple Festival, Lenten Dinners and various other functions. He also was an assistant boy scout leader Troop 190 in Lower Allen Township. Chuck belonged to American Legion Post 26 in Dillsburg, VFW Post 7530 and Hershey Italian Lodge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg. An additional visitation will be held on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
