Civil War Union veteran, Company C, 97th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers

He mustered in to the 97th Pennsylvania Infantry as a Private on March 15, 1864. He was promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on Feb. 1, 1865 and promoted to Full Captain on June 1, 1865. He mustered out of the service on Aug. 28, 1865 at Weldon, NC.

Capt. George W. Abel, a farmer from East Goshen, Pa. Enlisted at age 19 as a private on Sept. 11, 1861, for 3 yrs.; in Company C, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He re reenlisted as a Veteran at Fernandina, Florida on March 15, 1864 , was promoted to Corporal on May 28, 1864,to sergt., date unknown; pr. to 1st sergt., date unknown; pr. to 1st lieut. Feb. 1, 1865; commissioned a captain on June 1, 1865 but not mustered. He mustered out with his Company as 1st lieut, at Weldon, N. C, Aug. 28, 1865.
