12 Sept 1872 Lewis joined the US Navy serving until 17 Dec 1876 on the ship Omaha. On 7 Sep 1877 he went to duty on the ship Monongahela and served until 31 May 1879. During the greater portion of his time he was master-at-arms.

He married Catherine Bixby-Conn-Clark 31 Aug 1880 in Defiance, OH; they did not have any children.

After coming to Defiance Lewis worked at the Turnbull Wagon Works for 19 years when poor health kept him from steady employment. He was a charter member of the W.S. Hancock Lodge, No 207, K of P and that order was in charge of the funeral service in the Presbyterian Church. Lewis was interred in the "K of P" lot at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.
