He was born in Hazelton, N.D., on May 3, 1923, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict.
His wife Ruth preceded him in death in 1965.
Survivors include his children, Roy Smith and Ginger Yde, both of Helena, Bruce Smith of Wishek, N.D., Michael Smith of Bismarck, N.D., Kelly Smith, Robert Smith and Cindy Smith, all of Libby, and Quinn Podritz of Randolph, Minn.; a sister, Gladys Goerhing of Slayton, Minn.; 25 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Interment will be at Linton, N.D.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson & Vial Funeral Home.
