On 21 January 1941, he enlisted in the Army at Marlborough, Queensland, and was assigned to the 2/26 Infantry Battalion.
Deciding that the Infantry was not exactly the field in which he wished to be a participant, he transferred to the A.I.F. 1 Independent Company, which was sent to Papua New Guinea to quell the Japanese invasion of Australia.
At 23 years of age he was reported as "Missing in Action" and is remembered on the Memorial Panels of Rabaul War Cemetery as well as on the Memorial Walls of the Australian War Memorial at Canberra.
+++++++++++++ It would appear that Dudley falsified his date of birth in order to join the Army. On the Rabaul Memorial he is cited as being 19 years of age. ++++++++++++++
28 July 2012 ....In June of this year, the Japanese released to the Australian Government, a list of Prisoners of War taken by them.
Included in this documentation was a list of Australian Service Personnel and civilians from many countries around the world, who were on the Japanese P.O.W. ship Montavideo Maru when it was hit by 4 torpedoes fired by the U.S.S. Sturgeon and sunk. There were no survivors.
Pte Dudley Royes Ainsbury's name was among those listed as being on the Montavideo Maru.
