He travelled to Toowoomba, Queensland and enlisted on 28 July 1940, whence he was marched in as QX16533 Pte Ronal Burton Smith of 1 Independant Company, Australian Imperial Forces.
Ron was just 23 years old, when he was killed in battle.
"They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning.
We will remember them."
