CIVIL WAR VET DIES AT HOME
John Hillenburg of Norman Station Succumbs.
John L. Hillenburg, aged 97, a veteran of the Civil war, died at 1:30 Thursday afternoon at his home at Norman Station. Funeral services will be at 11 o'clock Saturday at the Hunter's Creek Baptist church with the Rev. Eli Fowler officiating.
One brother, Andrew Hillenburg of Brownstown, Ind., is the only member of the immediate family surviving, but the deceased has several distant relatives and many friends in Bloomington. He had been a farmer since his return from the war, during which he was a prisoner in the notorious Andersonville prison.
Pall bearers at the funeral will be: Francis Dillman, Rose Hillenburg, David Hillenburg, Will Callahan and William Dillman. Other funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
Interment will be at the Mitchell cemetery in Polk township.

He and his father enlisted in the Union army during the Civil war. both men were held prisoners by the Confederates in the Andersonville prison. His father was held for 11 months and John spent six months there.
John enlisted with Co. F, 93rd Reg. Indiana Infantry on Christmas Eve of 1863 and received an honorable discharge on Nov 10, 1865.
Spouse: Louise Sowder, married 1866 - Louise died in 1871.
Martha DeFord, married 1873 - Martha died in 1915.

Census indicates John was born 10/1842 in W Virginia and Martha was born 09/1854 in Indiana. John is a self-employed farmer. Children living in the home were Clara E(16) born 03/1884 and Maggie(7) born 06/1883 Hellenburg.
1910 Census - John L(67) & Martha J(55) Hillenburg are found living in a home they own located in Polk Township, Monroe County, Indiana. Census indicates John has been married twice and Martha once. They have been married 37 years and have had 6 children but only 5 are still living. John is receiving a soldier's pension. Child living in the home is Magie(16) Hillenburg. Also living in the home was a grandson Loris Crouch, age (6).
1920 Census - Marshall Hillenburg, age 46, is found widowed and living on a farm he owns located in Polk Township, Monroe County, Indiana. He can read & write. He is a self-employed farmer. Child living in the household was Hurbert Hillenburg, age 9. Also living in the ho,e was Marshall's widowed father, John L. Hillenburg, age 77, born in West Virginia. Census indicates John cannot read or write and Marshall's nephew, Loris Hillenburg, age 16.
5/1/1937 - Application for a headstone. A request for a headstone is requested by Loris Hillenburg or R.R.#2 Norman, Indiana for John L. Hillenburgh or John L. Hillenburg who served from 12/24/1863 to 11/10/1865 and was a private 93 Regiment, F Company, Infantry, who died 02/04/1937. It states burial was in Mitchell Cemetery, Heltonville, Indiana.
