Fern Caraway went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, March 20, 2022, in Tucson, surrounded by members of her family.

Nita Fern Broderson was born at home December 29, 1928, to parents Emmett and Carrie Broderson, in Healdton, OK, on an oil lease. She lived on an oil lease until she graduated from High School. Most of that time there was no electricity or indoor plumbing. After graduation she moved to Wichita Falls, Texas to attend business college. It was in Wichita Falls that she met and married Don Caraway. After a brief move to Aztec, NM., Don heard that there was a mine in Arizona hiring, so the Caraway family that now numbered 5 and one on the way, moved to San Manuel in January, 1956.

For a long while, Fern was a stay-at-home Mom to her 4 kids, but she eventually went to work at Mitchell's Department Store. She worked at San Manuel Drug briefly, Cohen's Department Store. Another little one was added to the first four in 1965. Now Fern went to work for Stearns Rogers, then in 1972 she went to work for APS (Arizona Public Service) and worked there 18 years, where she retired in 1990. She loved every job she had because she got to interact with the public, most of whom were her friends,

All through those working years, she found time to be a home room mother to each of her kids, teach Sunday School at First Southern Baptist Church, volunteer in the Nursery and Vacation Bible School, sew, crochet, and participate in her Beta Sigma Phi Sorority that she was a member of for 74 years, and still find time for her many friends.

Fern is survived by her 5 children: Cathy Fiihr (Doug), Steve, Diane Barker, Ronnie (Tina), Michelle Smith, 7 grand children and 4 great grand children. She is also survived by 4 sisters: Helen Lathrop, Marylou Hudson, Glenda Hooker, Jackie Youngborg, as well as 13 nieces and nephews.

Fern is also, preceded in death by her husband Don Caraway, grandson Blain Fiihr, son-in-law Charles Barker, parents Emmett S. and Carrie Broderson, brother Emmett E. Broderson, nephews Larry Hudson, Randy Penn, James Lewis, and nieces Pam Baggette and Jil Gurule.

Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, 3015 N. Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ 85705, on Friday, April 1, at 1:00 p.m.
