Katherine Wharem was born February 3, 1951 in Fort Dodge. She graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1969. Katherine attended Buena Vista College and received her Bachelor's in Education. After a period of time, Katherine moved to Texas and taught. She then received her Master's in Education and Diagnostics from the University of Texas Pan America. Katherine was a middle school and special education teacher. She was an accomplished writer and published countless research; most notable was her "Suicide in Young Hispanics" article.
Katherine later returned to Fort Dodge and retired from educating in 2012. She loved her career and life work but most of all, Katherine loved her family. She will be deeply missed by her children and grandchildren.

Katherine is survived by her daughter, Ronette Cabbell of Fort Dodge; Ryan Rasmussen of Fort Dodge; grandchild, Mary "Katiiee" Cabbell; great-grandchildren, Arriya and Elliya Cabbell; sister, Ella (John) Wirtz of Fort Dodge; Marianne (Gene) Lippold if Osceola; and brother, John (Linda) Wharem Jr. of Duncombe.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Fern Wharem; son, Santiago "Jimmy" Luna; and sister, Helen Byson.
