Civil War: Company E, 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry (9 mos.)

Charles H. Yagle was born in Ohio, the son of Henry Yeagle (1804-1894) and Susan Miller (1807-1866). Both of his parents were born in Germany. He was a resident of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted as a private for 9 months on August 8, 1862, and was mustered into Company E, 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry, at Pittsburgh. His regiment was attached to 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 5th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, and during its short period of service participated in the Battles of Antietam (Sep. 17, 1862), Fredericksburg (Dec. 12-15, 1862), and Chancellorsville (May 1-5, 1863). Private Yagle was mustered out with his regiment at Pittsburgh on May 13, 1863. He then married Eliza "Lide" Ellen Boggs (Jun. 7, 1843, KY-Feb. 28, 1929, San Jose, CA) in Allegheny County in 1864, where he remained for the next several years (1865 PA Census; 1880 US Census). Sometime around 1890 he relocated to San Jose, California, with his family. After his death in June, Lide filed for a Civil War widow's pension at San Jose on November 27, 1896, and received certificate No. 447,982. His name appears on a list of Union veterans buried at Oak Hill Cemetery whose graves were to be decorated on Memorial Day 1901 (San Jose Mercury, May 27, 1901).
