John M. DePuy was born in Ulster county, New York and decended from the French Huguenots on his father's side and from the Scotch on his mother's side. Both his grandfathers served in the Revolutionary War. His father served as a soldier in the War of 1812. He and four of his brothers served as Union soldiers during the entire period of the War of the Rebellion. He came to Missouri in 1898 and settled on a farm of about four hundred acres, which he purchased, adjoining the famous and noted Colonel Moses C. Wetmore Park and Game Preserve, which was in the southern part of Taney county near the Arkansas state line.

In 1904, the people of our county elected Mr. DePuy as a member of the Forty-third General Assembly of the Missouri House of Representatives, where he served during the entire session. In 1906, he was reelected and he served the first sixty days as a member of the Forty-fourth General Assembly. When he died in 1907, he died at his post of duty away from his family and home.

Mr. DePuy was survived by several children and grandchildren. Among his many grandchildren, Mrs. Myrtle L. (DePuy) Holland, a lifelong resident of Taney County Missouri.
