Russell Balge was a Horticulturist, gardener, and plant lover who worked for the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service in various roles and also taught Horticulture courses at the University of Maryland and various other schools. He retired from the University of Maryland as a "Professor Emeritus". For many years he had a TV show on gardening in the Baltimore, Maryland area and touched many lives with his advice on gardening and the problems and joys that come with gardening. He was written up many times in the local newspapers including the Baltimore Sun. He was a fixture at the Baltimore Home and Garden shows for many years where he gave lectures on all aspects of gardening and horticulture. He also loved classical music and enjoyed going to concerts. He was also a close friend of J. Roger Lee.
