AGED WICHITAN DIES
WILLIAM F. BERLIN
Funeral services for William F. Berlin, 94, who died Thursday at his home on route 3, were held in the chapel of Downing Mortuary, Saturday at 3 p.m., with Rev. H.A. Kuhns officiating. Burial was in Memorial Gardens cemetery. (in Wichita)
Pallbearers included John Bergen, Rolland Rea, Wilfred Berlin, Arthur Dempsey, Fred Kersting and George Covey.
Born January 15, 1850, in Germany, Berlin ran away from that country when he became 21 years old because he did not approve of the compulsory military training imposed on all boys of that age, and was against the warring trend of the nation. He came to the United States in 1871, and was a boilermaker's helper in Burlington, Iowa for many years.
Miss Dorotha Anna Richter came to the United States in 1873, also from Germany, and worked in a boarding house in Burlington, Iowa, where Berlin was staying. The two met, and married July 22, 1874. Mrs. Berlin died in August, 1932. Six children were born to them, two of whom are dead. William F. Berlin died at the age of 35 years, and Henry Berlin died at the age of six months.
Mr. and Mrs. Berlin came to Wichita 20 years ago. Mr. Berlin would have been 95 years old January 15, 1945. He lived with his daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Rea, route 3, for the past several years. Relatives stated that mercifully, he had not been told of World War II because of his ill health. He was a member of the Lutheran church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Rae and Miss Elizabeth Berlin of Burlington, Iowa; two sons, Edward of Monroe, MO., and Herman of South Haven, Kansas; 12 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
