Martha Almira Bridgford was the daughter of Walter Anderson Bridgford and Nancy Duckett Wakeland. She married Edward Worthington Carver 25 Jun 1874, in Millersburg, Mercer county, Illinois. Martha was the mother of four childran: Clarence Clayton Carver, Arthur William Carver, Laura May Carver, and Frank Lewis Carver. She moved with her husband to Kansas, and then to California. When my father, Richard Lewis Carver, was a little boy, he would visit his grandparents and Martha would always give him some bread smeared with lard as a treat! Being a California kid, he would go out to the yard and share all his bounty with the chickens, who did appreciate the food. She would also give him a dime and send him off to Sunday School, but he spent the dime going to the movies. He thought she didn't have a clue about his naughty activities, but I think she just wanted to get rid of him for a while, since he was probably hyperactive (although they didn't call it that in the 1920s.)
