Rossie was the seventh of nine children born to Rosa L. Humes and Charles D. Durham. Records reflect that he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 30 Sep 1940 at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was assigned to the Medical Department. He married Alma Maude Wells about 1943 while stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. There were no known children from the marriage.

On April 11, 1946, the Greensboro (NC) Record newspaper had at article relating that Rossie was one of the 28 veterans Honorably Discharged 31 Mar 1946, per the local Draft Board. However, he did not remain in the Greensboro area. Like many Kentuckians after the war, Rossie and Maude moved to the Detroit area where he worked until his untimely death.
