William was born in NYC, the son of Charles Stewart and Margaret A. Maloney. He married Lizzie Robertson in Nov 1891. Because of the family's financial circumstances, their 3 sons were removed from the home. Ultimately, those 3 sons (William, Hector, Charles) were sent to Iowa on orphan trains.

William died in 1921 after a fall from a ladder while hanging awnings.
